WHAT IS RENIN?

Renin is an enzyme that's naturally produced by your kidneys and leads your body to produce certain hormones. These hormones cause small arteries in your body to narrow. If the renin system isn't working properly, it can contribute to high blood pressure. What's more, those same hormones can cause your kidneys to retain more salt and water, which also may contribute to high blood pressure.

TREATMENTS THAT WORK IN THE RENIN SYSTEM

Renin Inhibitors block renin, an enzyme produced by the kidneys.
ACE Inhibitors (Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitors) stop a chemical in the body called angiotensin I from converting into angiotensin II, a chemical that causes blood vessels to narrow, raising blood pressure.
ARBs (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers) block the harmful effects of angiotensin II, a chemical in the body that causes blood vessels to narrow, raising blood pressure.
